BOONE COUNTY, Ind. -- There is a new way to properly dispose of worn American flags in Boone County.

New flag bins will be placed at the Boone County Veteran Affairs Offices, Center Township Fire Department Headquarters, and Lebanon Fire Department Stations 11 and 12.

A $1,500 grant from the Boone County Solid Waste Management District was used to purchase the bins.

Mike Spidel with Boone County Veteran Services says flags that are dropped off will be folded properly, burned, the ashes collected and buried.

At this point, Spidel says they don't know how often they'll need to hold the flag burning ceremonies.

He says the VFW and American Legion actually have a backlog of flags that need proper disposal and he saw this as a way to help.

Spidel hopes other communities will see the need for such a service and pursue the option as well.
