New ethanol rules could affect gas prices

Prices at the pump could drop even more, thanks in part to the EPA's revised energy guidelines.

The agency is pushing for 18.1 billion gallons of ethanol to be mixed into the gas supply in 2016.

Patrick Pfingsten, with the Indiana Farm Growers Association, says while that's more ethanol than in 2015 and up 4 percent from May's estimate, the EPA is about 4 billion gallons short of the law's initial goal for next year.

"This is bad for Indiana farmers," he said. "This is bad for Indiana consumers. This is bad for our rural communities. We have 14 ethanol plants in the state that produced a billion gallons of ethanol last year that directly off-set foreign oil."

Pfingsten also said the bump in ethanol should help to lower gas prices, and not impact what you're paying at the grocery store.
