INDIANAPOLIS -- A new poll shows the race for governor is neck-and-neck.
The survey, released by a Republican organization, shows 42 of registered voters disapprove of Gov. Mike Pence's job performance, while 40 percent approve.
The poll puts Pence 4 percentage points ahead of John Gregg – but with a margin of error of 4 percent, the race could be a toss-up.
"When you look at the poll, the governor is in a very tough position in this re-election campaign," said Megan Robertson, of Enterprise Republicans, who requested and paid for Bellwether Research to conduct the poll.
Robertson and former Angie's List CEO Bill Oesterle are leading the effort.
"Enterprise Republicans is essentially a group of Republicans who aren't necessarily happy with the direction we're seeing the Republican Party going," Robertson said.
The poll finds both Pence and Gregg are getting about 70 percent of their respective parties' vote. But, independents are breaking for Gregg by a 37-to-31 percent margin.
Gregg said he's glad to see that.
"Hoosiers don't want a governor that embarrasses them," Gregg said. "They don't want a governor that focuses on social issues. That just confirms what we've known all along, and it confirms that Hoosiers want a change."
Pence says he hasn't seen the poll, but points out that it's early in the election. He says he's focused on governing and making sure the state's economy continues to grow.
"Ultimately, the poll that matters is the one that's on Election Day, and I'm just determined to do my part to make sure that Hoosiers understand not just how far we've come, but my vision for going forward in the future," Pence said.
The poll also showed Donald Trump is leading Hillary Clinton by nine points in the expected general election match-up. Congressman Todd Young also leads Democrat Baron Hill by 14 points in the race for U.S. Senate.
