CARMEL, Ind. -- A major part of the state's Major Moves 2020 Project is underway in Hamilton and Madison counties.

The project will add 15 miles of interstate and a new lane in each direction on I-69.

INDOT says there should be minimal impact for drivers. Right now, a lot of the work is being done in off-peak hours.

The $92 million construction project extends years of improvements to I-69 in Hamilton County further north – another 15 miles from State Road 37 in Fishers to State Road 38 in Pendleton. It's part of the $3 billion invested in roads and bridges since Gov. Mike Pence took office.

"We're going to rehabilitate interstate bridges and drainage structures," Pence said. "The piece that will get the most attention is that we're going to add a third travel lane in each direction across this 15-mile stretch."

Work is already underway patching I-69, but drivers will see a major difference after then July 4 holiday, when traffic will be shifted south of Exit 210. The exit will also have new ramps.

INDOT says incredible growth and the corresponding traffic made adding an extra lane, rams and rehabbing bridges necessary.
