No injuries reported after SWAT standoff on city's west side

Johnson, 38, faces criminal confinement charge

INDIANAPOLIS - No injuries were reported after SWAT officers were called to a house on the city’s west side Wednesday evening.

Police were called to a home near Sheffield Avenue and St. Clair Street around 7:30 p.m. on reports of a couple in a fight, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.

Callers told dispatchers they heard gunshots and saw a man pull a woman into the home, officials said.

When police arrived, they tried to make contact with the husband and wife. They didn't get a response so they were concerned the woman had been shot and the man had a gun. SWAT officers were called to the scene.

The standoff ended just before 10 p.m. when SWAT officers forced their way into the home and found the woman, who had not been not injured.

The man, later identified as Shelley Johnson, 38, was found hiding inside the home and was immediately taken into custody.

Johnson faces a preliminary charge of criminal confinement.
