INDIANAPOLIS -- The National Transportation Safety Board is urging states to decrease their legal blood alcohol limits for drivers.

The NTSB is recommending the legal limit be lowered from .08 to .05.

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, impairment displayed at a BAC of .05 could include loss of small-muscle control, lowered alertness and impaired judgment.

The NTSB says by the time a person's BAC gets to .08, their risk for a fatal crash doubles.

IMPD Sgt. Michael Duke says if you're already calculating how much you would have to reduce your consumption to be under this proposed standard, then you're not looking at the issue appropriately.

"If right now what you're doing is doing the math, I would suggest instead doing the math about an alternate means of transportation," Duke said.

IMPD says regardless of what happens with the proposal, they do have authority to cite or arrest someone with a BAC under .08 if they feel that person is endangering other motorists.
