INDIANAPOLIS -

Police said an officer and his vehicle were involved in an accident near New York and West Streets Sunday evening.

An officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was driving eastbound on New York Street with a green light as he entered the intersection at West Street.

A 20-year-old female driving a Chevrolet Malibu was traveling southbound on West Street, entered the intersection and struck the rear half of the officer’s car on the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Multiple witnesses on the scene told police that the female driver disregarded the red light for southbound traffic.

The officer was transported to Methodist Hospital to be checked out after he was suspected to have a possible head injury.

The officer was conscious, alert and speaking to the transporting medics.

The female driver was also checked out by medical personnel on the scene and was released.
