OWEN COUNTY, Ind. -- With the help of the local sheriff's department, the Owen County Humane Society rescued 70 dogs from a property in rural Owen County.

According to a YouCaring post the humane society made, it received a call from the sheriff's department about a rat-infested property.

On Wednesday. 54 dogs were removed, with another 16 removed on Thursday. Crews finished removing the rest of the dogs from the property Friday. Exterminators will begin trying to get rid of an estimated 100,000 rats on the property.

There are 70 animals that are alive that were living in some of the most deplorable conditions this group has ever seen. The amount of trash, rats and squalor is hard to imagine, even as you are seeing it, tasting it, and smelling it your brain can not fully comprehend. It is safe to say we have never before taken in 70 animals in a 36 hour period.

The state veterinarian performed evaluations on all the dogs.

The dogs had fleas and ticks, and many were malnourished. The humane society said one dog has tumors on its front paws.

On Friday, the Humane Society posted an update, saying they don't need any more dog food, but to consider making a monetary donation.
