OWEN COUNTY, Ind. -- After a standoff with police that lasted more than 31 hours a man who was holding hostages inside an Owen County home was shot and killed by police.

The situation began just after 11 p.m. Thursday when officers were called to a home on Kinnickinick Ridge for a domestic situation where a man was threatening multiple people with a gun.

When deputies arrived the man had already forced his way into the home and taken 2 children and 2 women hostage, according to the Owen County Sheriff's Office. One woman was able to escape the home and the suspect fired several shots at officers and their vehicles.

The standoff continued overnight until just before 8 a.m. when the suspect released one of the juveniles. He released the second juvenile just after noon Friday but kept the second woman hostage at gunpoint.

The Owen County Sheriff's Office and Morgan County SWAT team continued negotiations with the suspect for the next 19 hours trying to convince him to surrender the last hostage. During the standoff, the suspect made multiple threats towards the hostages and officers on the scene and fired multiple shots from inside the residence.

Just after 7 a.m. Saturday, authorities said the suspect made himself visible through a doorway while restraining the hostage at gunpoint and was shot by a member of the tactical team.

"To preserve the life of the hostage, a single shot was fired by a tactical team member that incapacitated the suspect," the Owen County Sheriff's Department said in a release.

The final hostage was rescued by officers and taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No names have been released.

The situation remains under investigation by multiple agencies.
