INDIANAPOLIS - Police have arrested two Indianapolis parents in connection with the December death of their 3-year-old son , officials announced Friday.
Nicholas Gulling, 27, was formally charged with neglect of a dependent causing death and neglect of a dependent. Sandra Tomich, 35, faces formal charges of neglect of a dependent.
The couple’s son was shot in the head Dec. 7. He died as a result of his injuries the next day at Riley Hospital for Children, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.
Investigators believe the child shot himself after he pulled a gun off of the kitchen counter. Detectives found several loaded guns inside the home when they arrived that night, police said.
"We at the police department are very conscious of gun ownership, however, we want folks to be responsible about having guns in the home, particularly when children, young children who are curious, and can pick up a gun and play make-believe and fire that gun thinking that it won't end someone's life," IMPD Sgt. Kendale Adams said.
Police said it took more than three months to complete their investigation because they conducted a number of extensive interviews before they were able to bring charges.
Both suspects were being held in the Marion County Jail. Gulling was being held on $20,000 bond and Tomich was being held on $1,000 bond.
