MARENGO, Ind. - A woman was killed Friday evening when the driver of a pickup truck she was a passenger in fled from a town marshal and slammed into a tree, police said.
The crash happened after a chase that began just before 9:30 p.m. in Marengo, Indiana State Police said.
A Marengo town marshal tried to get Robert Michael Banet, 44, of Leavenworth, to pull over after spotting defective taillights, the ISP Jasper Post said in a news release Saturday morning.
Investigators said the chase went for about a mile on Valeene Road before Banet lost control of the truck and hit a tree.
Banet was taken by medical helicopter to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not determined to be life-threatening.
Jeannine Marie Farrell, 56, of Mauckport, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Results of the ISP investigation will be given to the Crawford County Prosecutor's Office to determine what charges might be filed.
