MADISON COUNTY, Ind. - Two people were killed and three people were injured in a head-on collision in Madison County early Wednesday.
Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson said the crash happened just after 6:30 a.m. on State Road 9 near State Road 28 north of Alexandria.
Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene and three victims were flown via medical helicopter to Indianapolis.
The Madison County coroner's office told The Herald Bulletin the victims killed in the crash were 37-year-old Oscar Cardenas and 59-year-old Antonio Perez.
Richardson said Lukas Green, 29, was operating a Chevrolet Cavalier south on SR 9. For unknown reasons, the car crossed the center line and struck a GMC Jimmy head-on and both vehicles stopped on the road.
Police said Green was trapped in the car and had to be extricated. He was taken to Community Hospital Anderson and later flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in critical condition.
The driver of the GMC Jimmy and a front passenger were pronounced dead at the scene by the Madison County Coroner’s Office, police said.
Two other passengers in the GMC Jimmy, Daniel Dimas and Kyle Kress, were taken by ambulance to Community Hospital Anderson and later flown to Indianapolis in critical condition.
Richardson said witnesses reported the Chevrolet had been drifting across the center lane before the accident.
The accident remains under investigation.
