BOONE COUNTY, Ind. - Two women were killed in a crash Tuesday afternoon near Zionsville, police confirmed.
The crash was reported just before 2 p.m. near 96th Street and Zionsville Road, officials with the Zionsville Police Department said.
Police said a Ford Explorer lost its right rear wheel due to lug nuts that weren't tightened, crossed the center line and hit a Chevrolet Prizm head-on. It appeared that the Explorer overturned.
The two women in the Explorer were pronounced dead at the scene. Mika Baird, 30, was driving the vehicle and Lesley Martinez, 31, was the passenger.
The driver of the Prizm, later identified as Laura Wilmot, 32, was not hurt. Police said all three women were wearing seat belts.
The crash caused officers to shut down 96th Street from Zionsville Road to Technology Center Drive for about an hour and a half.
Zionsville police ask that anyone who saw anything that could be helpful to the investigation to call 317-873-5967.
