PD: Expo shooter Shamus Patton faces 6 felony forgery charges
Patton could lose plea deal

INDIANAPOLIS - Shamus Patton, the man who was sentenced for shooting nine people during the Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration in 2010 is facing six felony counts of forgery after he allegedly falsified employer contact information while on a job search.
Patton, 20, was taken into custody last Wednesday after the vehicle he was riding in was pulled over on a traffic stop. As part of a plea deal from the 2010 case, Patton had been serving his probation at Brandon Hall, a correctional transitional living facility.
Before going on his job search, investigators said Patton was given a contact sheet to turn in to potential employers. Patton later told probation officers he put in applications at Dollar Tree, Pizza Hut, CVS, Mr. Gyro's, EZ Pawn and Super 8 Motel, but the contact information he listed proved otherwise, police said.
Patton was accused of forging the names of the employer contacts at each business, investigators said, which violates his parole. He could lose the plead deal he was given in the 2010 Black Expo shootings.
"Instead of seeking employment, he was going out with individuals other than the individual he was supposed to be going out with, such as his brother. He was with guys who were carrying weapons. He clearly, clearly was not seeking employment which was the whole point of getting him into work-release," said Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry.
Forgery is a Class C felony. If convicted, the minimum sentence per count is three years.
A prison reform group thinks that is too much.
"To put him in the position to be given 18 years, that's absurd. We don't condone crime by no means, but we do believe someone should be given a second chance so he can have his first success," said Rev. Byron Vaughn.
Patton's next court appearance is set for Aug. 13. His probation violation hearing will held at that time.
