Man in wheelchair fatally struck in hit-and-run on city's west side

INDIANAPOLIS - A man in a wheelchair was fatally struck by a vehicle on the city's west side Wednesday evening.
Officials said the hit-and-run crash happened near West Washington Street and Elder Avenue at 8:30 p.m.
Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department confirmed the driver left the scene.
The unidentified man was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital in critical condition where he later died, police said.
Witnesses told police as the victim crossed West Washington Street heading south, the vehicle sped out of a nearby business and struck the victim as he approached the curb.
After hitting the victim, the vehicle continued east on West Washington Street, police said.
Police were looking for a white Dodge Charger with possible front-end damage in connection to the crash.
A good Samaritan saw the crash and was able to write down the license plate number of the vehicle, police said. Police said they had a good lead on tracking down the suspect.
