INDIANAPOLIS - A 10-year-old girl was struck and killed on the city’s southwest side Tuesday evening, officials said.
Update: The Marion County Coroner's Office has identified the girl as 10-year-old Danielle James.
The incident happened in the 6800 block of West Thompson Road around 7:30 p.m.
Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the child was walking in the roadway wearing non-reflective clothing and the driver of a gold Mercedes was unable to avoid hitting her.
The driver stopped, remained on the scene and was cooperating with the investigation. Detectives do not believe alcohol played a role in the crash.
The girl was taken to Riley Hospital for Children where she later died from her injuries just before 9 p.m., police said.
Police called the case a tragic accident and said it could provide a life-saving reminder to other parents.
"Make sure you know where your children are. Don't have them walking on roads that are poorly lit. Have them wearing reflective clothing, but most importantly, be with them," IMPD Officer Christopher Wilburn said.
