INDIANAPOLIS -- State leaders in both parties say a broad conversation on a number of topics is needed in the wake of the deadly shooting at an Orlando nightclub.

"The hearts of every Hoosier are hurting today, along with every American," Gov. Mike Pence said about the terror attack that left 49 dead and even more injured.

Both Pence and Democratic challenger John Gregg reacted to the tragedy Monday, with Gregg renewing the call for statewide protections for the LGBT community.

"We have to have conversations with people of all different walks of life, ethnicities, backgrounds, and that's one thing a leader does, is encourage that discourse," he said.

Pence directed Indiana State Police to assist with added patrols for any upcoming vigils. Both he and Gregg indicated gun control is a decision they'll leave up to the federal government, where top Democrats are calling for stricter measures.
