FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, Ind. -- Some people who live in Franklin Township say they know the identity of a man who's been seen testing out doors and peering into windows, and they're making sure everyone else knows who they think he is too.

The community has posted the man's pictures, address and personal information on a Facebook page.

The page popped up last week after surveillance images were made public by concerned homeowners.

The page was created with good intentions to protect the community, but Indianapolis police say naming a person who hasn't been arrested, who police haven't publicly identified, interferes with their investigations.

"As we have always done, we encourage people to get involved in the fight on crime but report that to police, let us vet that and we'll push it out if it's a significant issue," said Sgt. Kendale Adams, IMPD.

Make sure to take the proper steps if you have information that you want to share with the community. Contact district headquarters and ask to talk to the crime watch specialists.  They can discuss what police know, where the case stands, and whether what you know may indeed be correct.

Police are not saying whether the man in the surveillance video is a potential suspect but they do have several investigators on the case.

Officers say, based on the surveillance images, the man may not have directly broken a law at all as voyeurism cases can be difficult to prove.
