INDIANAPOLIS - A man was struck by a suspected intoxicated driver in a hit-and-run crash on the city’s northeast side Wednesday evening, officials said.
The incident happened near East 38th Street and North Hawthorne Lane at approximately 9:30 p.m.
When police arrived to the scene, they found Luke Alberts, 25, lying on the ground. He was taken to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition, officials with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.
Several witnesses told police that a white Ford struck a bicyclist as he rode his bike with the flow of traffic, officials said.
Officials said the suspect vehicle continued eastbound on East 38th Street and caused another collision with a parked car on East 36th Street at Alsace Drive.
Police immediately apprehended the driver, later identified as 24-year-old Kenneth Chowning. Officers suspect Chowning had consumed alcohol or another illegal substance.
The driver has not yet been arrested, but will likely face preliminary charges after authorities finish their investigation.
