INDIANAPOLIS -- While a petition to stop Indianapolis' Red Line has gained popularity, so has a petition showing support for it.

On change.org, -- the same website where the anti-Red Line petition is hosted -- the petition named "I support the innovative Red Line public transit line in Indy" has more than 1,100 signatures, as of Tuesday morning.

The petition was started by a group called Residents for Effective Transit about a month ago.

There are hundreds of supporter comments on the petition, giving their reasons for signing.

Michael McKillip wrote

The redline will connect residents to jobs, food, and health care access. It will reduce congestion in our neighborhoods. It will increase access to our local businesses, boost property values, and encourage transit oriented development. Marion County needs more residents, workers, and better access to services. The Redline will advance them all. Ready to Ride RED! Input and support has been extensive. Studies have gone on for 20 years. Now is time to do this.

The planned route for Phase 1 of Red Line is:

  • Begins near College Avenue and 66th Street
  • South on College Avenue to 38th Street
  • West on 38th Street to Meridian Street
  • South on Meridian Street to 18th Street
  • West on 18th Street to Capitol Avenue
  • South on Capitol Avenue to the Downtown Transit Center via Washington or Maryland streets
  • Southeast on Virginia Avenue to Shelby Street
  • Ending at the University of Indianapolis

There is also a petition to stop the Red Line project, believing it is unnecessary and would congest traffic in the area.

The project's creators say they have done a traffic simulation for the area, and don't believe there will be any increase in traffic congestion.
