PLAINFIELD, Ind. -- The Plainfield Police Department is mourning the loss of K-9 Officer Aren, who had to be put to sleep this week.

The department posted on its Facebook page Wednesday that Aren had been suffering from health issues.

The decision to euthanize Aren was made by a veterinarian and Cpl. Brian Stewart, who has been Aren's handler for the past 10 years.

"Cpl. Stewart, along with the veterinary doctors, had to make this tough decision after a long and thorough evaluation of Aren’s health and quality of life," the department wrote.

Plainfield police will place a memorial honoring Aren's life in the lobby of the department beginning Thursday. The memorial will be in place until November 4.

The public is invited to share thoughts and pay respects by writing in a memorial book dedicated to Aren.
