Poet, activist Mari Evans dies at age 93

INDIANAPOLIS – Mari Evans, a poet, author and activist, died at the age of 93 Friday, according to family.

Known as one of the founders of the Black Arts Movement, Evans had called Indianapolis her home since 1947.

Many of her most famous titles are “I Am a Black Woman” and “Where Is All the Music?”

In August 2016, Evans was honored with a mural on the side of the Davlan building found in the Mass Ave neighborhood. The piece was created by artist Michael “Alkemi” Jordan, who was selected by Evans to create the mural.

The project was made possible through Big Car Collaborative.

Upon the news of her death, several in the Indianapolis community sent their condolences to her family.
