INDIANAPOLIS - A police officer watched as a speeding car lost control and crashed into a utility pole early Monday morning on Indy's east side. The wreck killed the driver and critically injured the passenger.
The driver was later identified as Carlos Guevara, 24, of Indianapolis.
Indianapolis police (IMPD) said at roughly 1 a.m., an officer was at the corner of Sherman Avenue and East Michigan Street, facing north. While waiting at the red light, the officer saw a gray car travel west on Michigan, speeding, with its headlights out.
IMPD said the officer let dispatchers know the car's description and where it was headed, but within seconds, the driver lost control of the car and hit a utility pole, severing the pole in half.
Emergency crews found Guevara dead at the scene and the male passenger, identified as 27-year-old Edgar Hurtado, was taken to Eskenazi Health in critical condition.
Officers said they don't believe at this point that alcohol played a role in the wreck.
