INDIANAPOLIS - One person was shot at the Shoe Carnival store on Lafayette Road around 9:30 p.m. Friday.
Police said witnesses told them that a man later identified as Nicholas Atwood, 30, of Seymour, tried to steal a pair of shoes from the store but was caught and detained by the store's security workers.
The employees detained Atwood by handcuffing him to a chair in the back of the store then they called police, officers said.
"At some point, there were two employees in the back, and there was some commotion. The suspect is heard saying, 'I have a gun,' and then a 'boom' is heard," said Metro police spokesman Kendale Adams.
One male employee, later identified as Johnny Ross, 48, of Indianapolis, was shot in the chest and was taken to IU Methodist Hospital in serious condition, police said.
Police said Ross was released from the hospital and was recovering at home.
There were four other employees in the store at the time of the shooting, but no other injuries were reported.
There were no customers in the store at the time of the shooting, police said.
Adams said the Atwood -- still handcuffed to the chair -- tried to flee the store through the front door, but it was locked.
In the meantime, employees flagged down a nearby off-duty officer for assistance.
A responding officer and a K-9 chased Atwood behind the Wal-Mart, where the suspect was caught, police said.
Atwood was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital with minor injuries caused by the K-9.
Metro police said the suspect is facing preliminary charges of aggravated battery, but more charges are expected.
