Police: Teens choked, stabbed transport officers with pencils in order to escape

HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. - Investigators said two transport officers were assaulted this week when a couple of teen detainees escaped from a vehicle. Those two were found less than 24 hours later, hiding at a church.
Robert Kinsey Youth Center Officials said a 16 year old and a 15 year old, both males, escaped from a transport vehicle around 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Howard County Sheriff's Office investigators said the two boys were being driven from the Warren County Jail to Robert Kinsey Youth Center in Howard County when the teens assaulted the officers and took off running.
The officers in the van said they had warned the two boys to not communicate with each other as the vehicle got closer to Kokomo. As the transport van turned onto Markland from Dixon Road, the officers said they heard the two teens say, "Now."
That's when, investigators say, the two lunged forward from behind the officers while placing a choke hold on their necks. While the officers struggled to break free, they said the two boys began stabbing the officers with pencils.
During the attack, investigators said the driver sustained injuries to the face, back and leg. The other officer was stabbed multiple times in the chest.
The officers were unable to break free and before losing consciousness, investigators said the driver made abrupt stops with the car, trying to break the hold. During the struggle, the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed it into a tree just west of the Howard County Sheriff's Office.
Officers said after the crash, the two teens ran south along the creek. The officers were able to exit the vehicle after a time, and then called 911.
Investigators said officers were able to track the escapees along the creek and wooded area for several hours before darkness hindered their efforts.
But, police said, at roughly 10:40 a.m. Thursday, officers got a tip that the escapees had broken into a home in the 2400 block of North Jay Street in Kokomo. When officers approached the home, they said one of the boys tried to run out the back door and there was a struggle with officers. Both boys were apprehended and taken back into custody.
Police said both transport officers were treated and released from St. Joseph Hospital Wednesday night.
Investigators said it appears the two boys formulated the escape plane during the two-hour drive from the Warren County Jail to Kokomo. The exact reasons for escaping are not yet clear, said police, but the events leading up to their being taken into custody in Warren County seem to be factoring into the equation.
