NEEDHAM, Ind. - Two boys, ages 9 and 10, could face arson charges after a cornfield was burned Sunday.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Department was called to the 3500 block of County Road 700 East in Needham on a report of a cornfield fire behind the Needham fire station.
Police said they found that the boys had been playing with a lighter in the field and set a leaf on fire.
The fire quickly grew out of control. The boys said they tried to put out the fire, but couldn't. They ran from the flames to their homes.
Police said neither boy called the fire department or told their parents about what happened.
Between a half-acre and an acre of corn was destroyed in the fire.
The property owners were informed, and the boys' parents were told that each could face arson charges as juveniles.
