INDIANAPOLIS - Police are investigating a burglary at a gun store near Speedway early Wednesday.
Dispatchers said about 3:30 a.m., someone used a car to break into the 500 Guns store in the 3600 block of West 16th Street.
Detectives said the store had bars on the windows and the burglars pried their way into the store after crashing the car into the entrance. The burglars got away with 27 handguns, Indianapolis Metro Police said.
The alarm company notified police dispatch within four minutes of the first sign of trouble.
"They arrived here in two minutes, a very good response from the officers here," said Lt. Chris Bailey, with Metro police. "When they got here, it was obvious that there had been an attempted break-in."
Bailey said police are now concerned about where the stolen guns will end up.
"They're probably going on the street. That's one of our biggest issues," he said. "It's a big issue for this community."
So far this year, Metro police have recovered 33 stolen handguns.
No description of the suspected burglars or the car they were driving was released.
Police asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
