IMPD: Child, 7, 'recklessly' shot on city's west side

INDIANAPOLIS - Police were investigating after a 7-year-old child was shot and injured Tuesday evening.

The incident happened at an apartment complex near West 38th Street and North High School Road just before 7 p.m., officials said.

Police said a 7-year-old female was "recklessly" shot in the elbow. Detectives said preliminary information indicated that the shooting was not random.

Police said the child was in serious but stable condition at Riley Hospital for Children. A man who said he was the girl's father said she had surgery and was doing well Wednesday afternoon.

Officials said the weapon used in the shooting had been recovered.

No arrests have been made, but police said the investigation is ongoing.
