ELWOOD, Ind. - A man wanted on a felony warrant was found dead in a crawl space after a standoff with Elwood police.
Officers from the Elwood Police Department and the Madison County Sheriff's Department were serving the warrant about 9:30 p.m. Thursday in a home on South K Street when they heard a gunshot, police said.
Officers left the home, set up a perimeter and called in Madison County SWAT, police said.
Attempts to communicate with the suspect failed, so officers tried a chemical agent to force the suspect from the home, police said. When that didn't work, the team deployed special camera equipment to get a look inside the home.
Officers later found the suspect dead in the home's crawl space, police said.
The man was identified as Michael P Rickelman, 34. The Madison County Coroner's Office said he shot himself.
