INDIANAPOLIS - A 4-year-old child remained hospitalized Tuesday after she was shot and injured on the city’s east side Monday, police said.
The incident happened in the 4100 block of Edgemere Court, near 38th Street and North Sherman Drive at 8 p.m., officials with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.
The young girl's mother initially reported the child was cut, not that she had been shot, police said. Officers were led to believe that the child was hurt when she was struck by a car, officials said.
The child was initially taken to Community Hospital East, but was later taken to Riley Hospital for Children when medical personnel realized the girl had a gunshot wound to her thigh, officials said.
The girl underwent surgery and was in stable, but good condition at Riley, police said.
"You have a 4-year-old child right now that's hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the leg. They can't speak for themselves. They can't advocate. All they know and all they can say is mommy or daddy it hurts," said IMPD Officer Chris Wilburn.
Detectives spoke with several witnesses who believed the gunshot came from a surrounding neighborhood.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS (8477).
