NEW CASTLE, Ind. - An inmate who was found unconscious at the New Castle Correctional Facility Thursday evening later died, police said.

The inmate, Jeremiah K. Taylor, 37, was found at the bottom of a stairwell inside the prison, a media release said.

Taylor was transported by ambulance to Henry County Hospital and then flown by medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he succumbed to his injuries Friday morning.

Investigators believe the injuries were not the result of an accident, and Taylor had been battered shortly before being found in the stairwell.

Taylor had been incarcerated at New Castle since July of 2012, police said.

The media release said he was serving eight years for convictions on a child molest charge out of Noble County.

The case is still under investigation.
