BOONE CO., Ind. - Two funeral homes in Boone County are under investigation for the possible misuse of money.
State police are leading the investigation of Russell-Hitch Funeral Homes.
Armed with warrants issued by the Boone County Circuit Court, state police searched both locations Saturday.
Prosecutors said investigators are looking for evidence of possible misuse of funeral trust money which pre-pays for funeral services.
Owner and funeral director Jerry Trapp said the incident is a misunderstanding stemming form a paperwork error.
Trapp said he didn't file funeral trust paperwork within the 30-day deadline, but he said no money was misappropriated.
Joan Hysong and her husband's family have worked with Russell-Hitch several times over the years.
"I don't want to believe he's guilty, I'll assume he's not guilty until proven otherwise," Hysong said.
Indiana State Police are advising people who bought funeral trust from Russell-Hitch Funeral Homes to contact their insurance provider and keep an eye out for anything suspicious.
Hysong said the only thing that stood out from her experiences was exceptional service.
“He's taken care of Bob's brother, his sister, his brother-in-law and his uncle, and they've always done a good job for us," Hysong said.
The six-month investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed.
