WALKERTON, Ind. - A homeowner digging a lake in his rural backyard uncovered the bones of an adult and an infant that likely date to the late 1800s or early 1900s, police in northern Indiana say.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Mike Grzegorek said the man called police Tuesday evening after he found a human skull while digging the lake near Walkerton, about 20 miles southwest of South Bend, the South Bend Tribune reported.

The homeowner had previously found other bones in recent months while excavating the lake but had assumed they were from an animal.

A specialist in forensic anthropology identified the skull and other nearby bones as those of an adult and an infant likely more than a century old.

Grzegorek said the site appears to have been a burial site.
