GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Greenwood police say they now believe an attempted abduction from Tuesday was simply a good Samaritan trying to help the child get home.
Police were searching for a man who may have tried to abduct a 4-year-old child.
A mother said her 4-year-old ran off across the yard while she was getting her children ready for school. Her nine-year-old daughter then took off after him.
She said a man reportedly grabbed the boy's hand and started to walk him back to his truck, while promising the boy candy.
The girl then grabbed her brother's arm and pulled him away from the man.
The officer noticed a white Ford F250 driving south on Combs Road with a tail light out. The officer pulled him over for the tail light violation.
When talking with the man, the officer casually asked if he had seen any kids near the road in the week.
The driver said he was on his way to work and saw a young boy standing close to the road without anybody around him. Being a father himself, the driver stopped out of concern and asked him to get into his truck to find his parent.
The man said a girl walked up to him and said "Hey Mister, that is my brother." The man said he felt like the child was no longer in danger, and he went back to his truck and drove away.
Police say the man has no criminal history and drives by the house every day on the way to work.
