COLUMBUS, Ind. - A crash involving a Bartholomew County deputy resulted in minor injuries Sunday afternoon, Indiana State Police said.

Deputy Chad Swank, 39, of Columbus, was traveling eastbound on County Road 800 North.

Deputy Swank was responding to an emergency call and his lights and siren were in operation.

Police said Claire Shoaf, 23, of Columbus, was traveling in front of Deputy Swank, but as he pulled out to pass her vehicle, she made a left turn into the path of the deputy.

Swank took evasive action to avoid the collision but struck Shoaf’s vehicle in the right rear, a media release said.

Swank was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital with a complaint of pain in his hand.

Police said Shoaf and her 3-year-old son, Wesley, were also transported to Columbus Regional Hospital suffering from minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
