INIDIANAPOLIS - A pedestrian was fatally struck on Interstate 70 near Post Road early Friday, police said.
The crash happened about 1:30 a.m. near mile marker 90.
Witnesses told police that the man had gotten out of a car that was still running before he was struck by a tractor-trailer.
Initial calls to dispatchers indicated that a vehicle had struck a deer before witnesses realized a person had been hit.
Police identified the victim as Johnny Cole, 33, of Greenfield, and they're trying to figure out why he was walking in the middle lane of the interstate.
The driver of the tractor trailer, Ivan Delgado, 40, of Miami, told police he thought he struck a deer. He was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital for a blood alcohol test, but investigators said they don't believe alcohol was a factor in the cause of the crash.
Interstate 70 was shut down for several hours after the crash because of the investigation and clean up. It reopened before 5 a.m..
