HAMMOND, Ind. - A pedestrian had to be airlifted Saturday after apparently walking into traffic on I-80/94, state police said.
Update at 7:55 a.m. Sunday: The pedestrian has been identified as Talgat Orumbayev, 23, of Chicago.
Senior Trooper Dan Avitia said he was responding to a report of an unidentified pedestrian walking on the ramp from Indianapolis Boulevard to I-80/94 east bound when the pedestrian suddenly walked out into the right lane and was struck.
Avitia said Terri Sams, 53, of Schererville, was unable to avoid hitting the pedestrian. His 2006 BMW was damaged on the front passenger side and windshield.
Sams was taken to Munster Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The pedestrian was airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill., with life-threatening injuries.
Police are withholding identification of the pedestrian pending identification of the family.
