Man surrenders to police after standoff at condo near 52nd Street and Georgetown Road

Police said man did not have hostages

INDIANAPOLIS - A man surrendered to police after a standoff at an apartment on the city’s northwest side Wednesday evening.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to a condo complex in the 5000 block of Clarkson Drive, near West 52nd Street and North Georgetown Road, just before 9 p.m., on reports of a domestic disturbance involving gunshots.

When SWAT officers arrived, they heard gunshots and saw a man carrying a shotgun and yelling obscenities, officials said. When police ordered the man to drop the gun, he disobeyed and ran into a condo and barricaded himself. Police said the suspect was alone and was not holding hostages.

Police set up a perimeter around the condo until SWAT team officers arrived.  Negotiators tried to make contact with the man, but they were unsuccessful and eventually used chemical agents to make him surrender.

Authorities said the unidentified man was involved in an earlier incident and that more details would be released later Thursday.
