INDIANAPOLIS - Emergency crews were investigating after a body was found in a small retention pond Friday afternoon.
The body was found behind a Kroger at 65th Street and Keystone Avenue on the city's northeast side.
Police said a Kroger employee was walking near the pond when he saw what looked like clothing and called the police.
Investigators have preliminarily identified the body as that of missing Avon man Joshua Swalls, 22, but that identity will have to be confirmed using dental records. Swalls has been missing since Nov. 3.
"After additional information discovered at autopsy this morning, our office has reason to believe that the person found at 65th and Keystone may be the missing person Joshua Swalls," a spokesperson for the coroner's office said.
Some were speculating early on that the body is that of Swalls, and some of his friends turned up at the scene where the body was discovered Friday afternoon.
The coroner's office has not released any information about the cause of death.
The Swalls family released a statement to the media Saturday that read in part, "The outpouring of support, thoughts and prayers from the community, and even around the world, through the searches, our Facebook page, website and Twitter has been tremendous and appreciated far more than each individual person could possibly know. We would like to take this opportunity to send them our deepest and most heartfelt thanks in giving of themselves to help us find our son."
The family said they would announce funeral arrangements for Swalls next week, and they've set up a benefit account in his name at Key Bank.
