NORTH VERNON -- Police are searching for the mother of a newborn child found wrapped in blankets at a North Vernon church Thursday night.

The child was found abandoned at Christ's Way Christian Church at 2425 N. State Road 3 in North Vernon.

The infant boy was approximately 12 hours old at the time. He was breathing and appeared to be in good health.

However, on Friday North Vernon police said the baby boy has an infection and is being treated for it.

Investigators are concerned that since the baby has the infection, his mother most likely has the same infection. A press release stated that because of the information police have received, it is important that the mother immediately go to the nearest hospital for treatment as the infection could be life threatening if not treated soon.

"Human life is our number one priority, regardless if it is Baby Boy Doe or his mother! We can’t stress enough the importance of Mom receiving medical care," the press release said.

Indiana's Safe Haven Law allows a parent, family member, friend, minister, priest or social worker to give up custody of a baby less than 30 days old to a hospital emergency room, fire station or police station in Indiana.

As long as there are no signs of intentional abuse on the baby, no information is required of the person leaving the baby.

Anyone with information about the child is asked to call the North Vernon Police Department at 812-346-1466. More information about Indiana's Safe Haven Law can be found here.
