FORT WAYNE, Ind. - An 18-year-old Wells County man has died after he was accidentally shot in the head Saturday afternoon, police said.
The teen and his 19-year-old friend were cleaning handguns at a residence in the 3200 block of West County Road just after 1 p.m.
Police said as the two young men were cleaning the handguns, one of the guns went off.
The 18-year-old victim was shot in the head with what appeared to be a .45-caliber bullet from the handgun that his friend was handling, police said.
The victim was immediately taken to a Fort Wayne hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery, police said.
The teen succumbed to his injuries and died in the hospital Sunday afternoon.
Police said no arrests have been made, and while it appears to be an apparent accidental shooting, an investigation into the incident is under way, a media release said.
The names of the young men involved were not released.
