AVON, Ind. -- An Avon High School student was killed Wednesday night in a crash in rural Hendricks County.

The crash happened after 6 p.m. on the 1700 block of South County Road 525 East in Avon.

Police say it appears the car slid off the road and hit with a tree.

The driver, 17-year-old Jonathan Legg, died on impact.

Police say he was wearing his seatbelt.

Jonathan was a junior at Avon High School. The school corporation released this statement:

Avon Community School Corporation is devastated by the tragic death of Avon High School student Jonathan Legg. Jonathan, a junior, was an exceptional school citizen who was highly thought of by his peers. His teachers said that he was hard-working, wonderful and witty. Jonathan was a member of the Avon Marching Black and Gold Band and was a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

The school corporation says counselors will be available beginning Thursday to talk to students and staff.
