WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - FiscalTimes.com has rated the top 10 public colleges with the most luxurious dorms, and Purdue University made the cut.
RTV6's Derrik Thomas visited one of West Lafayette's highly rated rooms to see what the fuss is about.
"Luxury is in the eye of the beholder," said Purdue residential life director Denton Sederquist. "There are some people who would probably say this isn't luxury living. We are providing a standard for people who want this service."
Senior Nick Caprioli, 21, took RTV6 on a tour of his room at First Street Towers. It is one of 532 single rooms with air conditioning and private baths that cost about $5,000 more per year than the average dorm room on campus.
"My parents and I have our own system worked out on who pays for what, but I think it's worth it," Caprioli said.
Caprioli said he is partial to the private bathroom and what comes with it.
"They clean the bathroom for you," he said. "(It's) not exactly maid service. They don't clean the room itself, just the bathroom."
In the student lounges on each floor there are 47-inch, flat-screen TVs.
There is a kitchenette area and a laundry room on every floor.
And just because the students want a single room, doesn't mean they have to be alone all the time.
For a group study session, group project or PowerPoint demonstration, students can hook that up in the cluster room.
Currently there is 90 percent occupancy in the single room dorms, and space is available.
The 10 schools that made the list, in order, are: Penn State, University of Michigan, Georgia State, University of Cincinnati, Purdue, Colorado State, Montclair State, Kennesaw State, Mississippi State and East Stroudsburg University.
