DELAWARE COUNTY, Ind. -- A retired Delaware County Sheriff's deputy has been arrested and is facing federal charges.

Arlan Johnson, who retired last fall after an internal investigation, was arrested in Muncie by the FBI.

A criminal complaint filed in federal court alleges Johnson stole $8,580 worth of ammunition owned by the Delaware County Sheriff's Office between Jan. 1, 2012 and Aug. 5, 2015.

According to the complaint, one of Johnson's duties as a firearms instructor was to order ammunition for the Delaware County Sheriff's Office using funds from a department account.

On or about July 22, 2015, the Delaware County Sheriff's Office initiated an internal audit of its ammunition. Employees discovered that the amount of ammunition in the storage room was significantly less than the amount of ammunition purchased using DCSO funds.

The audit also found a discrepancy between the amount of ammunition in the inventory, and the amount of ammunition Johnson had purchased on behalf of the Delaware County Sheriff's Office.

On July 22, 2015, Johnson was suspended. He retired on Sep. 18, 2015.

After he left the Delaware County Sheriff's Office, employees cleaned out his office and found a notebook and several downloaded records from PayPal in his desk.

The notebook and PayPal records detailed sales of ammunition online.

Johnson's girlfriend told investigators she sold ammunition online at Gunbroker.com on his behalf because his bankruptcy status prohibited him from having a credit card, which was needed to sell firearms on PayPal.

The complaint alleges Johnson also sold ammunition to people he knew and also to gun shop owners.
