INDIANAPOLIS - A returning Indiana guardsman popped the question to his girlfriend in front of friends, family and onlookers at Indianapolis International Airport on Wednesday night.
Pvt. Curtis Clark, 20, of Indianapolis, had been at basic training in Fort Jackson, S.C., since June.
Working with family members back home, Clark planned to surprise his girlfriend, Kayanna Krebbs, with a proposal when touched down in Indianapolis.
Clark's parents and brother, who brought the ring and roses, met their nervous son upstairs at the airport before the big moment.
As he rode the escalator down to baggage claim, Clark was greeted by dozens of cheering friends and family, along with an anxious Krebbs.
After the couple embraced, Clark got down on one knee, shocking Krebbs and onlookers. She said yes, before hugging him again.
"It's shocking. Words can't explain it really. I thought everybody wanted to see him, but apparently it was more than that!" Krebbs gushed afterward. "I love him with all my heart. He's the one."
Family members were excited for the couple, and glad they kept the secret under wraps.
"She deserves it. She's a good girl," one family member said. "Curtis really makes her happy."
