School bus hits boy, runs over girl at bus stop near Taylorsville

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. - A young girl remained in serious condition at Riley Hospital for Children on Thursday after she and her brother were struck by a school bus in Bartholomew County.

Officials said it all happened around 7:30 a.m. near Chaucer and Buckingham drives just south of Taylorsville, Ind.

Investigators said two children - a girl, 9, and a boy, 6 - were waiting at their bus stop in their neighborhood when they were hit by the bus.

RTV6's Julie Pursley spoke with the Bartholomew County's deputy sheriff, who said investigators believe the girl was run over by the bus and her little brother was hit by the bus.

Although they're still piecing it all together, investigators went on to say a witness in a nearby home said he saw the kids run out as the bus was approaching.

"Preliminary information that we have from a witness is that they may have darted in front of the bus," said Bartholomew County Sheriff's Dept. Chief Deputy Todd Noblitt.

The driver of the bus said he had just made a stop and was pulling in his stop arm and accelerating when the bus hit the kids.

The kids, students at Taylorsville Elementary School, are foster siblings. RTV6 spoke with their older foster brother, who said the little boy had a bump on his head but has been released from Columbus Regional Hospital. He's reportedly OK.

The foster brother said, however, the girl was not in as good of shape. After the bus ran over her, he said she couldn't move her legs.

She was airlifted to Riley Hospital for Children in serious condition.

Witnesses said emergency personnel were on the scene almost immediately.

"Everybody was here in such exceptional time," said neighbor Heather Fish. "Especially for injuries, that's everything you can hope for; how fast that they were here.  It was amazing."

When asked whether the kids were headed to the bus stop, or were running because they thought they were going to miss the bus, investigators said they were still unsure.

There were roughly 30 children on the bus when it crashed. They were taken on to school afterward by another bus.
