BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Monroe County school officials battling declining enrollment say they're frustrated that the Indiana Department of Education won't provide data showing names and addresses of students who have received vouchers to attend private schools.
The Herald-Times reports the DOE denied the request from the Monroe County Community School Corp., citing federal education privacy laws.
School board member Sue Wanzer says the request for names, addresses and amounts of vouchers awarded is about accountability.
The DOE did provide the numbers of students who received vouchers and the total scholarship amounts. That data show that 60 students in the district received more than $221,000 in vouchers for the 2012-13 school year and that 11 students received more than $44,000 in vouchers in 2011-2012.
