Scientists study Purdue football team for concussion research

Sensor pads in helmets relay information

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - As the college football season gets underway, researchers at Purdue University were collecting important data related to concussions.

A team of scientists attended Purdue’s practice complex on Friday to study and learn how to make the game safer for athletes.

The researchers monitored the power of every hit the players took by installing a sensor pad inside the helmets that relays information to a computer.

"Our original question from the very beginning was why do some kids get concussions and some don’t," Clinical Professor of Kinesiology Larry Leverinz said.

Scientists have spread their focus to athletes of all ages to find the answers they are looking for.

"One of the things we've been doing for a long time is studying high school players and one of the things we wanted to do here is move up to the collegiate ranks and see if there's a change when you add in players that are bigger, stronger, better-skilled," Professor of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Eric Nauman said.

The afternoon did not deliver any major hits for researchers, but scientists hope the research could still lead to safer equipment and fewer concussions.

Scientists said they don’t have the answers yet, but the research was certainly contributing to the bigger picture.

Researchers said they will work to collect data for the remainder of Purdue’s season.
