CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ind. -

A southern Indiana sheriff's deputy was seriously injured early Friday after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Indiana State Police said.

Just before 2 a.m., ISP said Crawford County Deputy Jesse Belcher, 26, of English, shot himself in the head at his home in the 2700 block of Benham Mill Road.

Belcher was rushed to University of Louisville Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators did not release details about what may have prompted the shooting, but ISP officials said Belcher spoke to another Crawford County deputy on the phone just before the incident.

ISP said the shooting remained under investigation.
