NORTH VERNON, Ind. - Several North Vernon residents received an unwelcome New Year's surprise Wednesday when a shoeless man broke into their homes and began yelling at them.
Police said just after noon Wednesday they received multiple reports of an unknown man forcing his way into homes in County Squire Lakes and then yelling at occupants for no apparent reason. In one report, the caller said the man was threatening children.
An Indiana State Police trooper responded to find a man walking in the area with no shoes or socks on. The trooper reported the man had a blank stare and seemed agitated.
The trooper said he confronted the man and, after he began to resist, was forced to deploy his Taser.
Police identified the suspect as 20-year-old Levi Hawkins of North Vernon. He was taken to Jennings County Jail on multiple charges, including invasion of privacy, a class "D" felony, and resisting law enforcement.
